In the Infinite River of Options, Clarity is Your Superpower
I’m ready for Less AND Better™
Let’s make profit a habit.
You know that low-level buzz in your body that starts Sunday night? The one that whispers, "There’s so much to do. You should be more on top of things. You’re behind again."
That feeling isn’t failure. It’s a side effect of being a woman chiropractor running a business in a world that never stops handing you opportunities and to-dos.
Let me explain.
Rivers and Buckets
Jono Hey's wonderful Sketchplanation of "Rivers and Buckets" about Oliver Burkeman's "River" idea recently resurfaced in my feed. And wow, did it hit home.
In short: Life has an infinite supply of information, obligations, choices, and to-dos. And the river never stops. Despite our best efforts, we get overwhelmed not because we failed to filter, but because the supply is infinite. Our filters worked. We filtered out the junk and still ended up drowning in high-quality to-do’s and to-haves.
If that doesn’t describe being a woman in practice, I don’t know what does.
The Power of Letting Things Float By
Here's the reframe: the river isn’t the problem. And neither are you.
What if you didn’t need to chase every great idea? What if your value doesn’t come from how much you do or have, but from the peace and discernment you bring to your practice?
Opportunities are floating by all the time. When you trust that the right ones will make their way to you—and they always do when you're clear on what matters—you can stop fretting so damn hard.
When I experienced that, the shift released something deep.
Clarity Changes Everything
Of course, trusting the river is easier said than done when you're running payroll, ordering biofreeze, and still seeing patients at 6:45pm on a Thursday.
For me, what made this trust possible was clarity. And I didn’t find clarity by meditating on a mountaintop. I found it the month I installed Profit First.
As I transferred money and tracked accounts, I started to see the truth of my business. Not just how much I was making, but what was actually available. What I could spend. What I needed to earn. What was optional versus essential. It made the choices floating by easier to choose or let go without guilt, regret, or anxiety.
It wasn’t instant. But month by month, my ability to discern got sharper. I could look at what floated by and say: "Not for me right now."
There’s some serious power in being able to say that with conviction!
